Night stand painted silver metallic

For a long time I wanted to paint something metallic but it had to be the right piece, if you know what I mean.  When I saw these night stands  (I have actually two) I knew they would look great in silver metallic.  These night stands are very well built,  very solid, I think they are from the 70s.   I did a little research which paint would be best and  after reading a couple of blogs I decided to  use the Rustoleum Metallic Silver spray paint.    The night stand was sanded and cleaned with TSP (tri-sodium phospate).  I usually clean my pieces with TSP.    ALWAYS wear plastic gloves,  this is strong stuff.  I gave her two coats of Zinsser primer.

At first I spray painted the entire night stand metallic but that did not look good.  The metallic looked great on the shelves and on top, but not the sides.  Maybe different wood?

Anyhow,  I painted the final coat a medium grey.   Pewter grey from Benjamin Moore in egg shell finish.

Doesn’t she look great?  The last step was using Valspar Translucent Color Glaze in Mocha.  This toned down the color a bit so the silver was not too flashy.

I hope I can finish the second one this week,   everybody is back home from college so I myself spend way more time in the kitchen than in my workshop. ..

    • Hi Traci: I actually wrote two posts about the metallic night stands. The first one was written on May 9, 2012. It explains more in detail how I achieved this look. I was planning to spray the entire night stand silver, but that did not work out. Anyhow, please read the post and don’t hesitate to email me if you have more questions.
