Once in a while I sell a few freshly painted items at a local antique and/or consignment store. I usually ask the owner beforehand what he is looking for, because he likes a variety of things. Last time I visited the store the owner mentioned to me that he has many requests for vintage magazine racks. So I immediately searched for magazine racks. The first one I purchased is a simple mid century rack, I am sure you have seen those around:
It looks good even without a coat of paint, but you know me, I love to paint and I gave it a coat of old white chalk paint. This was too boring for me, so I spiced it up. Whenever I want to spice something up I reach for Martha Stewart Saffron Red. It is actually a mix of orange and red, and quite vibrant.
After one coat of saffron, the magazine rack looked like this:
Yes, I could have stopped here. It is a fun and warm color, but I wasn’t finished yet. I am always looking for a second color, and I added again a layer of old white chalk paint and I finished it off with a layer of clear and dark wax, also from Annie Sloan.
I distressed it just a bit, so some of the real wood would show. I love this little rack…
And you can also use it to something else than magazines or books like towels, or large kitchen stuff or hang it on the wall! Use your imagination..
