Sometimes I need to take a break from furniture painting and grab some wool and knitting needles instead. I absolutely love to knit and to crochet, especially in the winter months. Nothing more cozy than a hand knit scarf and hat. I made the hat for my son who lives in a colder part of the US. , but men of all ages will enjoy this easy-fit rib hat. It is a super easy two needle hat, originally designed for Red Heart Super Tweed, but I used Patons yarn instead. Check the gauge before knitting: 19 sts x 24 sts = 4″ unstretched. The pattern can be found on the Red Heart website and even on favecrafts.com. I made mine in black:
The scarf was made with two novelty yarns: Moda Dea Burst and TLC Amore. I am not sure these yarns are still available in the stores, but sometimes you can still purchase these yarns at the thrift store or online at eBay. Any novelty will do, as long as you check your gauge.
When you work with a novelty yarn you can use simple stitches. I knitted this scarf in a basic knit and purl stitch. the size of the scarf is approximately 13″ x 60″ (or desired length). Gauge = 9 sts = 4″ (double strands)
I used 2 balls moda dea burst in a grey/white mix and 2 balls in tan/white. And I had 1 ball of TLC Amore. Knitting needles: 9mm (US13) or size that gives you the correct gauge. The entire scarf is knitted with 1 strand each TLC Amore and Moda Dea Burst.
Cast on 30 sts. with 1 strand Amore and 1 strand grey Moda Dea Burst. Row 1: RS K across. Row 2: P across. Repeat these 2 rows for stockinette stitch until scarf measures 15″. I changed colors and used 1 strand Amore and 1 strand tan Burst. Until scarf measures 30″ I changed colors and used 1 strand Amore and 1 strand grey Burst. Change colors this way until scarf has desired length. End scarf with a P row. Bind Off, and weave in ends.
Doesn’t this look soft and cozy?
